SOMHI project kick-off – Development of Intelligent Objects to realize multiple man-machine interfaces for proximity use, oriented to the Industry 4.0 paradigm

The project was launched in January 2018

SOMHI project intends to develop a new digital solution within the framework of the INDUSTRY 4.0 to encourage the use in close proximity of HMI on mobile devices to access in real time machines data and production plants components for operational purposes and set-up.

This solution involves the creation of a “Cyber ​​Physical System” able to collect data and presenting information to operators through innovative mobile and heterogeneous HMI systems.

In particular, the system wants to be set up to offer services to operators (push or pull type) specifically addressed to support tooling / set-up and maintenance activities, reducing time, and simplifying the use of machines.

The project plans to enrich the machines with electronic devices (smart objects) that allow the access to data and operating information held by their control systems (PLC, CN, …), possibly integrating them with others, captured by additional sensors.

In any case, the solution must be modular and guarantee interoperability between the various modules thanks to standardized interfaces.

The smart objects will have their own processing capabilities, acting as a cloudlet for greater efficiency of real-time processes on mobile devices in proximity, or in the case where internet connectivity is limited. They will ensure local communication with available devices with the latest technologies (industrial tablets, head-mounting devices), able of providing the means by which the operator can obtain the desired support.

This ability of smart-objects to operate in cloudlet architecture guarantees continuity and security requirements of operational requisites in the manufacturing industry, as well as the ability to offer specific services to employees in the vicinity through augmented reality, integrated alert management and punctual diagnostics.

Smart objects will also allow to connect machines in “Cloud” networks both public and private, according to the Industry 4.0 paradigm, making possible the update or information exchange.

SOMHI project presents a cross-sectoral transversal nature: some proposing companies operate in different sectors and propose to apply the results obtained within the project.
